Finding Commentaries in the Library Catalog

Finding biblical commentaries requires you to search carefully. This is because many of the books of the bible have titles that are used in many other contexts (i.e. John, Judges, etc.).

These steps can help you find biblical commentaries using keyword searches and filters within our Discovery Advanced Search.

  • Before you input keywords, make sure that you are only searching "Library Catalog." This will only search for physical and electronic books in our catalog.

  • Next, you want to perform a search with appropriate keywords, usually containing the word "bible" and the name of bible book.

  • Then, under "Refine your results," click under where it says "Subjects"

  • Here you can find subject headings for the right biblical book. It will usually have the format "Bible John Commentaries" or "Bible John Criticism Interpretation Etc." Clicking on one of these should give you an appropriately narrow search for commentaries on your specific book.

  • *NOTE: The Atlanta Campus (Swilley Library) houses a lot of these commentaries as well. You are welcome to request any commentaries from the Atlanta stacks, but it can take a few days. If you would prefer just commentaries that you find in Macon (Tarver Library) you can filter those results as well. Under where it says "Location" you can exclude books from Swilley or you can select certain filters like "Tarver (Macon)--Stacks, 3rd."
