Library of Congress Classificaton System for Music

Mercer University Libraries has an extensive collection of music materials online and on the shelves. Such materials include books, scores, and recordings in a variety of disciplines.

Browse our shelves using the following classification system as a guide:

In general --

  • The first line will be a letter/letters which represent its subject area
    • M = music scores
    • ML = books of literature on music
    • MT = books of music instruction and study
  • The second line represents the specific subject. For example, piano sonatas (23) within the larger classification of scores (M) are represented by M 23.
  • The third line or Cutter, reflects a letter/number combination to indicate the author or topic. For example, in the M23 section, Prokofiev is represented by the Cutter number .P93. This means Prokofiev's piano sonatas would be shelved together in that section.
