The Jesse Mercer statue was dedicated on January 29, 1997 during the annual Founder's Day Convocation when Mercer University celebrated its 165th anniversary. The sculpture depicts the Baptist statesman relaxing on a bench with his hymn book, The Cluster, resting on his knee. The commissioning of the statue was initiated in 1990 by Student Government Association President, Hugh Lawson. The sculptors are Donald Haugen and Teena Stern. The statue is life-size and is made of solid bronze. It weighs 1000 pounds and cost $48,000.
