Read and Publish Agreements

What is a Read and Publish Agreement?

Read and Publish agreements are a way for institutions to maintain access to scholarly content available only through subscription, while supporting the transition to open access publishing by their affiliated researchers. Institutions are, in effect, redirecting their expenditures on subscriptions to cover the open access article processing charges.

These agreements cover both subscription payments (the “read” element) and also article processing charges (the “publish” element). They enable Mercer University authors to publish open access without further fees in journals that are part of the agreements (eligibility criteria apply).

How do these agreements affect Mercer University researchers?

The article processing charges (APC) are covered for researchers who are the corresponding author and choose to publish open access in eligible journals under the publishers who have an agreement with Mercer University Libraries. When submitting articles to the publishers, Mercer University researchers are required to use their Mercer email address to confirm their affiliation.

What is a corresponding author?

A corresponding author is defined as the person who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process. The corresponding author has the authority to act on the behalf of all co-authors in all matters related to publication of the manuscript. In addition, the corresponding author acts as the point of contact for any enquiries after the paper is published.
