"[Porter] tried to be attentive to all of Dr. Minor's instructions:
Choose a subject about which you have some knowledge.
Narrow your subject to your own experience.
Do not use contractions in formal writing.
Do not make a comma fault; such an error ensures an F.
Above all, write about something you know.
Use only black ink.
Avoid redundancy.
Dr. Minor had given the class a list of subjects from which to choose: Art, Roads, Ships, Theaters, Clothes."
