Chapter 10 in Whisper of the River:
Huber says to his class regarding their unimpressive test results, "'This is a French class; I assume you are learning English elsewhere. However, the harvest I gleaned was a bitter one. Since my own methods have not changed in something approaching a score of years, I am led to the assumption that either the University has this year scoured the back woods of the state for students of the lowest mentality it could find, or else this particular class has been victimized by high school teachers with only a perfunctory interest in the subject and also an appalling lack of ability to share their meager grasp of it.'"
